Richard H. Jones, 70, of Chaplin, beloved husband of Elizabeth (Carlson) Jones, died at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, May 4, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with lung disease. He was born October 15, 1935 in Providence, RI, son of the late Benjamin and Charlotte (Hayward) Jones, and had lived in North Windham most of his life, moving to Chaplin 13 years ago. Richard was a volunteer fireman for the town of North Windham from 1951 to 1960. He was also an auxiliary Connecticut State Trooper from 1957 to 1960 and a part time Police Officer for the city of Willimantic from 1960 to 1977. Richard loved his job as a police officer and was known far and wide for his Thursday night traffic duties ala the Candid Camera traffic cop. Richard also worked for 37 years at Pratt & Whitney, retiring in 1992 as a department manager in assembly and test. He was also considered a rotor and balancing expert and traveled throughout the country and abroad as an adviser to other divisions. He will be remembered fondly for his wicked sense of humor, devotion to his wife and family and love of his furry companions. In addition to his wife he is survived by 4 children and their spouses, Lori and Jeff Mather of Columbia, Cindy and Michael Morrissette of Scotland, Douglas and Debora Jones of Potomac, MD, Steve Jones and his wife, Lynn Lewenberg-Jones of Carlsbad, CA, a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Walter Stone of Hampton, 7 grandchildren, Stephanie, Melanie and Haley Mather, Bethany, Julie and Brian Piernikowski, Alexandria Jones, several nieces and nephews and 2 special friends, Maverick and Athena. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to his funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
