Richard Buskey Obituary
It is with a profound sense of celebration for a life well-lived that we honor the memory of Richard E. Buskey, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Richard's journey began on February 26, 1935, in Willimantic, CT, and came to a peaceful close on January 10, 2024, in North Windham, CT, surrounded by the love of his family.
Richard's life was a testament to the power of dedication, service, and love. After proudly serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956 and continuing his commitment to our country in the National Guard for an additional six years, he demonstrated the true spirit of a patriot. His military service was a cornerstone of his character, instilling in him values of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.
In his professional career, Richard's passion for culinary arts shone brightly as he worked as a Chef Manager at UConn's Dining Services for an impressive 40 years. His relentless work ethic, coupled with his culinary expertise, left an indelible mark on the countless students and colleagues who had the privilege to taste his meals and experience his leadership.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard's heart was truly at home, surrounded by his beloved family. His love story with his wife of 63 years, Marie E. (Schwager) Buskey, was one for the ages, a partnership grounded in mutual respect and unwavering support. Together, they raised a family that grew to include their children Paul E. Buskey (Tina), Deborah (Richard), Jeffrey (Dalilah), and daughter-in-law Tina. Though predeceased by his son Gary, Richard's legacy continued to thrive through his lineage.
The joys of grandfatherhood were many for Richard as he embraced his role with vigor and tenderness. His grandsons Christopher, Brandon (fiancé Jen), Matthew (girlfriend Kristen), Elijah Ganoe, Zachary (fiancé Kyleigh), and Jacob Buskey, and his granddaughters Nicole, Sarah, Alexis, and Rachel Buskey, all benefited from his wisdom and humor. The family circle expanded with great-grandchildren Kaylin and Brayden Ganoe, who brought a renewed sense of wonder and delight to Richard's later years.
Richard also leaves behind Sister-in-law’s Elizabeth (Robert) Zahansky, Janice Kincman and Lillian Schwager along with cherished friends Ben and Elaine Russo.
Richard's life was also enriched by his numerous nieces and nephews, who will carry forward the lessons and love he shared with them. He was the last leaf on his family tree, predeceased by his parents, John and Sarah Buskey, his brothers John and Harry, and his sisters Gertrude, Eva, and Jennie.
In reflection of Richard's life, one can see the clear imprints of his character: the fortitude of a soldier, the creativity of a chef, the warmth of a family man, and the loyalty of a friend. His presence was a beacon of inspiration, his laughter a melody that resonated in the hearts of those who knew him, and his guidance a compass for the generations that follow.
To have known Richard E. Buskey was to have witnessed a life lived with purpose and joy. His story does not end with his passing but continues in the lives he touched and the memories that will be treasured forever. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we do so with a sense of gratitude for the time we shared with him and the lessons he imparted.
Richard's life reminds us all to approach each day with vigor, to nurture the bonds of family, to serve with pride, and to savor the simple pleasures that life offers. As we celebrate Richard, let us carry his spirit with us, finding motivation in his unwavering commitment to excellence and his enduring belief in the goodness of people.
