Reinhold August Dorwart, college professor, scholar, naval captain and devoted family man, died Sunday, November 3rd, 2002 in Willimantic at the age of 91 from complications following spinal surgery. Dr. Dorwart was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, attended Holyoke High School and Amherst College. After receiving his PhD. in History from Harvard, he began a distinguished teaching career at the University of Connecticut that spanned 40 years and touched the lives of an estimated 10,000 students. During World War II he served in the navy, later commanded the Naval Reserve Training Station in Hartford, and remained an active reservist for 25 years. A noted scholar of German History, he also was a visiting professor at his alma mater Amherst as well as the cofounder and former president of the New England Historical Society. Dr. Dorwart is remembered by his devoted wife of 69 years, Juanita, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Nelly Dorwart, David Dorwart and grandchildren, Catherine, Karl and Candace. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Thursday at 12 noon. Words of remembrance will be shared at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be private.
