Raymond Chaput Sr., 91, of Willimantic, husband of Doris (McClure) Chaput, died Monday October 28, 2002 at the Windham Hospital. He was born March 1, 1911 in Willimantic, the son of Godfroi and Angelina (Gerard) Chaput, was a lifelong resident of Willimantic and a graduate of Windham Technical School. He was a communicant of St. Mary Church, past president and treasurer of the former St. Mary's Holy Name Society and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4314, 3rd degree. Mr. Chaput was a member of the Jackson Street Senior Center where he enjoyed playing the piano for other members. His childhood hero was Charles Lindbergh and Raymond took great interest in his life and achievements. During the 1930's and 1940's he owned the North Street Fish Market, he later was the meat and produce department manager for the First National Store and manager of the meat department at Abe Lariviere's Market. Ray was better known as "The Friendly Butcher" by his many customers. Prior to his retirement at age 65 he was employed for many years at Keegan's Meat Market in Columbia. In addition to his wife he is survived by 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Raymond Chaput Jr. of Willimantic, Roland and Donna Chaput of Windham, Linda Marie Theresa Ryan of Willimantic, a sister, Anita James of Willimantic, 3 grandchildren, Wendy Chaput, Chad Chaput and Holly Lynn LaRoe, an adopted granddaughter Laura Lee Bradley, 3 great grandchildren, Krystelle Chaput, Dylan Dancosse and Amanda Lily LaRoe, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Norman Chaput, a brother, Ernest Chaput and a sister Antoinette LaBelle. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. Willimantic TODAY from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. prior to the procession to his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Valley St. Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham.
