Philip Wendell Whipple

June 18, 1918 — April 9, 2003

Philip Wendell Whipple, recently of Granby, CT and formerly of Stonington, CT, died April 9, 2003 at Meadow Brook Nursing home after a long illness. He was born June 4, 1918 to the late Philip Thomas Whipple and May Helen Potter Whipple in Ledyard, CT. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII stationed in Germany. Mr. Whipple retired from Electric Boat in 1980 after 37 years as a machinist. He loved to relate stories of helping to build the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. He also had a great interest in automobiles and took pride in mom?s yellow 1972 Monte Carlo. He sang in various church choirs for many years and never lost his gift and passion for singing while residing at the nursing home. He had a great fondness for tending to the church landscaping. He also loved his own vegetable gardens and orchard at the family homestead, Cedar Hill, in Stonington, CT. But most of all he loved his family, friends and neighbors. He leaves, to cherish his memory, three children and their spouses Jane and Jeff Lawrence of Albuquerque, NM, William and Deborah Whipple of Windham, CT, May Helen and Ned Hildreth of Southwick, MA; also a daughter-in-law Patricia Whipple of Groton, CT and a sister Hazel Patterson of Old Saybrook, CT. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Flora Reid Orkney Whipple in 1995, a son Wendell Orkney Whipple, Sr. in 1994, a sister Doris Schultz and a brother William T. Whipple in 1994. A private burial is to take place at Starr Burying Ground in Groton on April 11th. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at the First Congregational Church of Windham. The family wishes that contributions to the American Heart Association, CT Affiliate Inc., P.O.Box 5022, Wallingford, CT 06492-7522, be made in lieu of flowers.
