Philip Fichandler

February 12, 1921 — May 3, 2003

Fichandler, Dr. Philip D., 82, died Saturday, May 3, 2003. He was the widower of Shirley F. Fichandler and son of the late David and Rose Fichandler. July 4, 2003 would have been their 60th anniversary. Born in New Haven he lived for the last 50 years in Storrs. He was a long time and very involved member of the Mansfield Senior Center where he served in various leadership roles and as member of a number of projects and committees, including the development of a computer training center which bears a plaque in his honor. He received his veterinary degree from Auburn University and served as an officer in the Army in WWII and retired from the United States Department of Agriculture, where he spent several years in Mexico on a project to eradicate Hoof and Mouth Disease. Phil was a member of the faculty of the University of Connecticut. His late brothers were Jay, George and Sam. He is survived by three sisters-in-law, Lillian Alpert, Sophie Hennes and Gitty Kramer. He was blessed by a large and very close, loving family that included his children Mark and Patrizia Fichandler, Sherry and Michael Howard, Sandy Faivre, Karen and Steven Kaplan, Bruce and Mary Fichandler, Joseph and Ann Fichandler, his grand children Kayla, Christina and Fidel, Bryan and Kimberly, Deborah and Sarah, Kristopher and Jessica, Rachel and Heather, his great grandchildren Charles Pierce, Elizabeth, Sean and Ryan and numerous nieces and nephews and far too many dear friends to mention. Phil will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, love for family, his tireless commitment to the needs of others and his readiness to devote himself to any project or cause that he became involved with. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Hillel Burial Society Cemetery, Rte. 32 at Rte. 31, Mansfield. A reception will immediately follow at the Mansfield Senior Center. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the Mansfield Senior Center, 303 Maple Road, Storrs, CT 06268 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
