Pearl Widmer

June 5, 1920 — May 15, 2012

Pearl Adell Gilmore Widmer, of Storrs, passed away on the morning of May 15th, 2012, three weeks shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born and grew up in Freeborn, Minnesota. She obtained a Masters Degree in Home Economics with a specialty in textiles at Kansas State College. After working to ensure textile quality met government standards in Washington DC for several years, she came to Storrs in 1948 to teach at the University of Connecticut. She married Wilbur James Widmer in 1950 and then devoted her time to raising 3 sons and being active in the community. She was generous in donating time to church charity functions, the Parent Teachers Organization, and teaching underprivileged children. Pearl was very committed to the Storrs and Mansfield Center communities and an active member of the Storrs Congregational Church. She was a very caring and generous person committed to helping others. She was a survivor of two battles with cancer and deeply appreciated the help she received from friends and neighbors. She was predeceased by her husband Wilbur and is survived by their three sons: Fred and his wife Liz McGandy of Framingham, MA; Wilbur (Bill) and his wife Jan Narciso of Fort Pierce, FL; and Mark and his wife Pat Palmer of Princeton, NJ; two grandchildren Christopher and Cody, sons of Bill and Jan; and several nieces and nephews. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Friday May 18th between 6:30 and 8:30pm at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. A private interment service will take place in Storrs Cemetery on Saturday followed by a public Memorial Service at 3:00pm at Storrs Congregational Church, Storrs. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Storrs Congregational Church, The Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer, or the American Cancer Society. Pearl you will be missed.
