Paul Niskanen Obituary
Paul Andrew Niskanen passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, at the age of 71, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Born on January 24, 1953, in the Bronx, New York, to the late Urho Immanuel Niskanen and Helmi Sofia (Nuttula) Niskanen, Paul's early years were filled with the love and traditions of his Finnish native family.
Paul's journey through life was one marked by devotion to his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 36 years, Shelley Niskanen of Scotland, CT, and his son, Allan Niskanen of Oakdale, CT who will forever cherish his memory. Though Paul's parents, his brother Olavi "Nick" Niskanen and his wife Virginia "Ginger", his sister Eila Makipuro, his brother Leo Niskanen, and nephew Mark Makipuro predeceased him. His legacy continues through his brother-in-law, Hannu Makipuro of Willimantic, sister-in-law Jeanette "Jeannie" Niskanen of Niantic, and his adored nieces and nephews: Geri White, Linda Zaicek, Mary Prisco, Maritta Makipuro, Eric Niskanen, Amy Richter and their families as well as extended family members in Finland and Australia.
An alumnus of the Data Institute Business School of East Hartford, Connecticut, Paul distinguished himself as a Computer Electronics Specialist for Phizer & Right Computer. His expertise and work ethic were unparalleled, and he became a respected IT specialist, solving problems with a calm demeanor and a sharp mind. His professional life was a testament to his belief in the power of technology to improve lives.
Paul's commitment to service was evident through his selfless work as a former volunteer firefighter for South Windham and his past membership with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary at Mystic. He was a man who not only understood the value of community but also acted upon it, dedicating countless hours to ensuring the safety and well-being of others.
Beyond his professional and volunteer work, Paul had a passion for life's simple pleasures. He was an ardent New York Yankees fan, reveling in the highs and lows of baseball with the fervor only a true aficionado could possess. Photography was another of Paul's pursuits; through his lens, he captured moments of beauty and significance, leaving behind a visual legacy of his perspective on the world.
Cooking was a skill Paul honed with delight, especially when it came to grilling. His love for his dog Corina was well known; she was more than a pet, she was a cherished companion. Additionally, as a former member of the Windham Fish & Game club, Paul enjoyed the camaraderie and the outdoors, embracing both conservation and the sporting traditions.
Paul's life was one of purpose and joy. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the memories he has left behind. His was a life well-lived, full of passion, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones and community.
In honoring Paul's life, we remember a man who was as steadfast in his personal & professional relationships. His generous heart, and the love he had for his family and friends will forever be imprinted in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
