Paul H. Horiska

Paul H. Horiska, 87, of Lebanon, husband of Stella (Wasylishyn) Horiska, died Wednesday August 27, 2003 after a lengthy illness. He was born April 13, 1916 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Wasyl and Katie (Krzemien) Horyczka. He came to Lebanon in 1918 and went to a one room grammar school where one teacher taught all eight grades and graduated in a class of two. He attended Lyman Memorial High School and graduated in the class of 1934. He was a World War II veteran and was assigned to the United States Signal Corp which was attached to the Air Force at that time and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. As a radio operator using the Morse Code he monitored the radar station to detect incoming enemy planes. Later he was based in Ecuador where he headed a crew that ran these operations. After the war he took over the family farm in Lebanon and was awarded the Greener Pastures Award for New London County for best crop management and later was appointed by the former Governor Ribicoff to the State Soil Advisory Committee. Mr. Horiska was a member of the Farm Bureau and numerous other agricultural organizations as well as a voting delegate to the Connecticut Milk Producers Association and the Farmer's Co-op. He was active in community affairs and was a charter member of the AmericanLegion Post #180,he helped build the Post building and served as Legion Commander. He was a charter member of the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department and served on the new high School building committee. He was elected to the Lebanon Board of Selectmen where he served for 9 years, was a member of the Democratic Town Committee and Democratic Town Chairman. He was also elected to the Lebanon Board of Assessors where he was responsible for assessing all personal property. In addition to his wife of 57 years he leaves 2 daughters Marilyn Hinson and her husband William of Germantown, TN, Joyce LeMay and her husband Thomas of Windsor Locks, 2 granddaughters, Lenore and Lauren Hinson of Germantown, TN, 3 sisters, Sophie Dzidadul of St. Petersburg, FL, Stella Gabiga of Lisbon, Mary Kendzior of Colchester, a brother Steve Horiska of Lebanon, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Peter and James. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic. His family will receive friends at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Mass will also be held Tuesday September 2nd at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Town St. Lebanon. Please omit flowers.
