Oscar Meimers Obituary
Oscar Meimers, a beloved husband, father, grandfather (Opa), and friend, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2023. Born on January 30, 1945, Oscar was a remarkable man, and his life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the value of hard work.
Oscar was born in Erbach, Germany the youngest of three children to Elidija Milllins Meimers and Mikelis Meimers. His family immigrated to the USA in 1949, where they took up residence in New London, NH on the Philips farm. Oscar’s family helped work the farm for years until they saved enough money to buy a house in Willimantic, CT and settled into family life. Life wasn’t always easy. Fitting in at school was a challenge for Oscar. He didn’t speak English and was very shy but his determination, intelligence, and perseverance ultimately lead to his success not only in school but life.
While attending Eastern Connecticut State University and frequenting Dunkin’ Donuts in 1973, he met his wife Joyce Diamond Sanelli. They married on August 7, 1982 surrounded by friends and family. In 1984, along with their 11 year old son Steven, they welcomed into their family Amber Marie. In 1986, they welcomed Eric Christopher and in 1987 Sara Ann. Oscar worked hard to make sure they were taken care of and felt loved everyday.
Oscar was a man of intellect, service and ambition. He served as a medic in the Vietnam War where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and Marksman Badge. He was fluent in two languages, Latvian and English. He held bachelors degrees in both psychology and business, which served him well throughout his successful career. For nearly 30 years, he was a dedicated employee at DDS, where he was known for his commitment to excellence and his unwavering work ethic.
Beyond his professional life, Oscar was a man of many interests and talents. He was a skilled chess player, a hobby that showcased his strategic mind and competitive spirit. He had a passion for traveling and was always eager to explore new places and cultures. Most recent travels included Latvia, England and France. Oscar’s love of reading and vast knowledge on many subjects, made him a great conversationalist. He was also a gardener, carpenter, mechanic, handyman and more.
Oscar had a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh and a unique way of phrasing things. He brought much happiness and laughter to every family gathering. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family and his two puppies, Casey and Lacey. Oscar loved taking Casey and Lacey on long walks and cuddling with them on the couch.
Oscar was preceded in death by his mother, Elidija, father Mikels, and brother Imants. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his Children Steven Sanelli, Amber Dubnov and husband Avi, Eric Meimers and wife Maggie, Sara Roberts and her husband Jeff, and his cherished grandchildren Kelsey Sanelli, Donovan Roberts, Darcie Dubnov, Delaney Roberts, and Bowen Oscar Dubnov. He is also survived by his sister Anita Osis.
Oscar lived a rich and fulfilling life, marked by his generosity, gentleness, and intelligence. He was a devoted family man who was loved deeply. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration. His life was a gift to all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to touch lives for generations to come.
Calling hours will be held at Potter Funeral Home in Willimantic on Friday July 14th 2023 from 2-4 pm. In his memory, donations can be made to The American Legion 339 Brick Top Rd Windham, CT 06208 and The American Heart Association.
