Odessa Elaine Spurlock

July 21, 1921 — October 27, 2002

Odessa (Fuller) Spurlock, 81, of Jackson St. Willimantic, wife of Kelly Spurlock, died Sunday Oct. 27, 2002 at the Windham Hospital. She was born July 21, 1921 in Brownsville, TN. the daughter of James Fuller and Annie Bates. She was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Gary, IN. After attending W. Virginia State College for two years, she left during W.W. 2 to work as a secretary for the Surgeon General's Office in Washington, D.C. In 1946 she married Kelly Spurlock and moved to Willimantic and became employed as a secretary at the University of Ct. until she retired early , due to illness, in 1964. Prior to her retirement, she was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Willimantic and also served several terms as secretary of the Human Rights Commission in Willimantic. Those who knew her will remember her as one of high spirit and intellect who loved flowers, music and life. In addition to her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters and sons in law; Karla Spurlock-Evans and Booker Evans of W. Hartford and Janis Spurlock-McLendon and Anthony McLendon of W. Hartford, 5 grandchildren; Mariama Evans and Booker Evans Jr. and Sharlamar, Nia and Toni McLendon, several brothers in law and sisters in law; Reble Spurlock and Christine Spurlock both of Willimantic, Leonard Spurlock, Margaret Spurlock, and Lois Hopson all of Salem, VA., Helen Scarborough and Dorothy Spurlock both of Philadelphia, PA., Betty Shearin of Columbia, S.C. and Grace Hopson of Storrs and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends including 2 lifelong friends Mamie Joiner of Aberdeen, MD. and Dr. Domina Spencer Moon of Boston. Her family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:00pm at the First Congregational Church, 199 Valley St. Willimantic, with burial following in the New Willimantic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Connecticut Chapter, 705 North Mountain Rd., Suite G102, Newington, Ct. 06111-1411.
