Nyle Smith Sr., 71 , of Columbia, husband of the late Barbara (Sage) Smith, died Saturday May 28, 2005 at Haven Health Center in Willimantic. He was born Nov. 1, 1933 at home in Andover, the youngest of nine children of Homer and Josephine (Crans) Smith. Nyle served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961 and then continued his service in the National Guard until his discharge in 1993 as a Master Sergeant. While in the military he was a vehicle mechanic. Prior to his entry into the military, Nyle had been employed at Ken s Garage in Andover. He enjoyed doing small engine repair at his shop at home and was also trained as a carpenter. Nyle was a member of the Shriners. He is survived by 2 daughters and sons in law, Susan and Shaun Barrett of Columbia and Kathy and Larry Slyman of Lebanon; a brother Dale Smith of Bolton, a sister Grace Hanson of Indiana, 9 grandchildren, Brandy and Nyle III, Shaun Jr., Shannon, Shaleen and Shaylyn, Kaytee, Kristee and Lawrence Jr. and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Nyle Smith Jr. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Wednesday between 6:00 and 8:00pm.
