Nancy Gamache Obituary
Nancy Theresa (L’Heureux) Gamache, 81, of Willimantic, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2024 with family by her side.
Nancy was born on June 2, 1942 to Ernest and Anna L’Heureux in Willimantic, CT. After graduating from Windham High School, Nancy went on to work as a secretary at Pratt & Whitney, working for 22 engineers in the office. Like all secretaries at that time, she could be seen walking through the plant in her high heels, which would often get stuck in the blocks of the floor, causing laughter from the men.
After taking time off to have her three children, she started work as a paraprofessional at Natchaug School in Willimantic, where she spent the next 37 years. Nancy was a fixture in the office, answering phones and organizing everything she could. She loved working with students and always taught them to do their best. Many former Natchaug students will remember walking by Mrs. Gamache’s house on the way to Field Day and seeing the colorful banner hung up each year. Some years they might have even been sprayed with the hose on their way back to school.
Nancy married Henri Gamache on June 29, 1963. They spent almost 61 years together and both said they would do it all over in a second. Nancy and Henri were strong supporters of the Special Olympics and were at countless practices, games and tournaments watching their son, Eric, play soccer. Each year they would follow the team to the State Tournament and cheer them on from under their canopy.
Nancy enjoyed gardening and could often be found weeding and watering her many vegetables. She was also an avid backyard bird watcher and would point out birds and their songs to everyone. Her family was her most prized possession and she will be dearly missed.
Nancy was predeceased by her brother, James L’Heureux and her sister, Phyllis L’Heureux. She is survived by her husband, Henri Gamache, daughter, Lisa Gamache, son, Eric Gamache and daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Ray Kandolin. She also leaves three grandchildren, who she called “her little darlings”, Michael Kandolin and his fiancée Madi Unterstein, Anna Kandolin and Scott Kandolin and the many dogs in the Kandolin household.
There are no calling hours. A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at 9:00am at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St., Willimantic. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Special Olympics Connecticut.
