Morris Singer

UConn Professor Emeritus, Long Time Storrs Resident Passes Professor Morris Singer, 84, died of natural causes May 22, 2005 in Longwood Florida. Prof. Singer is survived by his wife of 52 years Hilda Leah Singer, son Lawrence and Bonnie Sheets Singer of NYC New York, son Paul, daughter-in-law Prof. Rhonda Singer Ovist and grandson Dana Michael Albert Singer of Longwood and Winter Park Florida. Born in Chicago to Eve and Albert Singer on April 30, 1921 he would serve 4 years in the Army during World War II, earn a Bachelors degree from the University of Chicago, a Masters degree from UCLA and PHD from Univ. of CA at Berkley. Dr. Singer began his teaching career in the Department of Economics at the Univ. of Connecticut in September 1955 and remained with the university until he retired in 1983. During that time he was recognized on several occasions by his students and peers for his dedication to and excellence in teaching. He published several book and articles on economic development. He mentored many graduate students on to success, the most well known being former Turkish Prime Minister Tansu Ciller. Prof. Singer loved UConn, his home, his friends and the entire Storrs community. Only failing health and a desire to be near his grandson took him to Florida. He will be returned to Storrs where his final resting place provides a view of the Social Sciences building where he taught for so many years. He will be missed. There will be a Memorial Service at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Wednesday May 25th at 1:00 PM followed by a private burial and a public reception from 3 - 6 at the Nathan Hale Inn on the Storrs Campus.
