MIRA B. WILCOX DOW Mira B. Wilcox Dow died peacefully on January 31, 2012 at the age of 98. Born Mira Katherine Briggs on February 13, 1913, in Lewiston, Maine, she was one of eight children of Walker W. and Marion B. Briggs, including her twin brother Kendall, all of whom predeceased her. Mira was the first female senior class president at Jordan High School in Lewiston. She graduated from Bates College in 1935 during the Depression and was the first in her class to get a teaching position. After three years teaching in Maine and Massachusetts she came to Willimantic in 1938 to teach history at Windham High School from which she retired in 1978. She has been a member of The First Congregational Church of Willimantic since 1942 and became a permanent deacon in 1982. She also served for many years on the House Committee at The Card Home. She survived her two husbands, George A. Wilcox, also of Willimantic, and Laurance E. Dow of Belfast, Maine and Willimantic, and her son George K. Wilcox of Eastford. Surviving her are her daughter Elizabeth H.W. Fry of Stamford, Elizabeth's husband Brian R. Fry, her son's widow Sue A. Wilcox of Eastford, her grandsons, Edwin, Keith and Chad Wilcox, and their wives Cheryl, Erin and Stephanie, her grandsons Christopher and Charles Fry, and Christopher's wife Moya, eleven great-grandchildren, one nephew, five nieces, many great and great-great nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. Calling hours will be held at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street, Willimantic on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral at The First Congregational Church of Willimantic, 199 Valley Street, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday February 8, 2012.
