Michael James "Jim" Smith Jr., a lifelong resident of North Franklin, CT, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, on what was his 89th birthday. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Marjorie Chowanec Smith, who passed away in 2015. Jim and Marge were high school sweethearts, attending Windham High School in the 50s, and were married on October 6, 1956. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised five children. Jim was known by all who met him as a kind man, always willing to lend a helping hand. Born on July 8, 1936, Jim was the beloved owner of Smith’s Auto Sales on Route 32, a business that continues his and his father's legacy through the dedicated work of his son Chris and grandson Christopher. Jim's passion for vintage gasoline memorabilia is evident throughout the shop, where his impressive collection of Esso signs, gas pumps, and oil cans became a cherished focal point. Jim's life was a testament to enduring love and spirit. A dedicated community member, Jim served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 15, guiding his sons and countless other young men. He was also a proud founder of Tri-State Four Wheelers, where many lifelong friendships were forged through years of exhilarating jeep racing, memorable trail rides, and good-natured shenanigans that brought joy to all involved. Jim leaves behind a cherished family, including his four children: Steven of Dallas, TX; Scott of Franklin, CT; Chris of Franklin, CT; and Cindy of Mt. Airy, MD. He was predeceased by his son, Craig, of Andover, CT. Jim is also survived by four devoted daughters-in-law: Patti of Dallas, TX; Kathy of Hartford, CT; Joann of Franklin, CT; and Mary of Maine. His legacy continues through his 14 grandchildren: Barrett, Bennett, Conley, Joshua, Jessica, Christopher, Nicole, Michael, Zoë, Malia, Leonardo, Elijah, Dominick, and Catarina; 10 great-grandchildren: Knox, Klara, Hazel, Logan, Cameron, Blake, Harlow Rose, Jack, Noah, and Alex; and one great-great-grandchild, Ella. Jim will also be dearly missed by his beloved best friend, Lucy, the sweetest Pit Bull. Jim's kindness, generosity, and vibrant spirit will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Funeral visitation will be held on Monday, July 14th, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson Street Willimantic, CT. Followed by burial on Tuesday, July 15th, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Pautipaug Cemetery in North Franklin, CT
