Michael Frank Beal

May 11, 1951 — April 7, 2015

Michael Frank Beal of Storrs died April 7, 2015. Mike was born May 11, 1951 to Harold Mumby Beal and Mary Hussey Beal Squires. He was a true son of UConn, growing up on Whitney and Gilbert roads in the center of campus where his father was a professor at the School of Pharmacy. He attended Storrs Grammar School and E.O.Smith, graduating in 1969. He was a member of the E.O.S. State Championship soccer team. After school Mike took a job in food services at UCONN and worked up to management level over a 25 year career. He met his wife, Denise Godburn Beal, at work and they were married on a beautiful October day in 1986. They had wonderful years together, camping and kayaking in Vermont and New York State and traveling to St. John in the winter. Michael had an abiding love of history, geography, news, and most of all the natural world. He spent countless hours with his brother Stephen monitoring the wood turtle and the black racer populations in his beloved Fenton River valley. Finding artifacts left by Native Americans provided many hours of joy. Mike possessed an incredible memory for names of wild flowers and plants. He was a great brother and friend. On January 12, 2014 his beloved Denise died. Michael never recovered from her loss and died of a broken heart. Michael is survived by Lucy and Brian Andrews of York, ME, Stephen and Alexandra Beal of Wethersfield, Robert Beal of New London, Richard and Diane Squires of Miami, FL, Robert and Deborah Squires of Stewart, FL and Stephen Squires of Mansfield. He also leaves his nieces Chloe Beal, Jennifer Andrews Demaree, Gabrielle Beal, Bridget Beal and nephew Peter Andrews. There will be a brief graveside service at the Storrs Cemetery on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM, followed by a celebration of Michael's life at Holiday Hill in Mansfield Center at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Harold M. Beal Scholarship Fund at the School of Pharmacy. Information can be found through the UConn Foundation website: foundation.uconn.edu.
