Melvin Chester Evans, 77, of Memorial Drive, Willimantic, husband of Juliette (Marquette) Evans, died Tuesday Aug. 5, 2003 at the Windham Hospital. He was born March 29, 1926 in Sterling, the son of William H. and Clara Belle (Littlefield) Evans. Mel was well known in the Willimantic area as a painter for over 30 years. He was a World War 2 Army veteran and a member of the James J. Shea Post#19 American Legion and Gold Star Post#1424 VFW. Mel was an avid fisherman who almost never missed opening day. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Ronald Evans Sr. and his wife Donna of Chaplin, a daughter, Patricia Evans of Colchester, a step daughter, Janet Lesniak of Willimantic, 2 brothers, Howard and William, 4 sisters, Evelyn Bernier, Eleanor Hines, Cora Lambert and Norma Corrigan, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. There are no calling hours and the funeral service will be private with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham. Arrangements through the Potter Funeral Home, Willimantic.
