Maurice T. Smith ASHFORD - Maurice T. Smith, 85, of Ashford, peacefully joined his wife, Anne D. Smith, leaving his loving family and friends on February 18, 2006. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a Surgical Technician. He received a certificate for performance of duties during the war from former Mass. Governor Maurice Tobin. After the war he served in the U.S. Air Force as a medical service officer (Staff Sgt.). He was formerly employed by the Mansfield Training School. He was an active Masonic member of Corner Stone Lodge #122 AF&AM Thompson, CT. He was 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Norwich Consistory, St. John's Commandry #11, Trinity Chapter #9 R.A.M., Order of Amaranth Rainbow Court #20, Radiant Chapter #11 O.E.S. and Olive Branch Council #10 R. & S.M. He was also a member of the Sphinx Temple AAONMS in Newington, the Sphnix Moslem Shrine Club and the Legion of Honor. He was also a member of Masonic Temple, Windham. He and his wife, Anne received much enjoyment from their membership in the NTC (National Camping Travelers), a Masonic camping group. Mr. Smith was also a member of the Rockville Lodge of Elks #1359. He is survived by a devoted son, James C. Smith of Ashford; a daughter, Deborah M. Cutler and her husband, Raymond of Pomfret. Survivors also include his stepson, William F. Tilden and his wife, Elizabeth of Tolland; three stepdaughters, Patricia A. Piatek and her husband, Joseph of Willington, Cheryl L. Hebblewaite and her husband, Russell of Storrs and Janet T. Conley and her husband, Thomas Sr. of Lebanon. He also leaves his loving grandchildren, Shelly, Sandy, Renee, Tracy, Thomas Jr., Jennifer, Julie, Karen, Shannon, Jamie and Sean and 13 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all who lovingly cared for Maurice. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195), Willimantic, Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with burial following in the Woodward Cemetery, Ashford.
