Matthew Thomson Obituary
Matthew Mark Thomson, known to all as Matt, was a man who lived his life to the fullest, enriching the lives of those around him with his dedication, kindness, and infectious joy. Born on January 12, 1965, in Holyoke, MA, Matt left an indelible mark on every person and place he encountered, before passing away peacefully at home on September 24, 2023, in Windham, CT after a courageous and tough fight with Stage 4 aggressive Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Matt's legacy is one of unwavering commitment and love for his family. He is survived by the love of his life Jeanine Thomson, and their strong and loving daughters, Jocelyn, Kirstie, Jacqueline, and Heather. He was a cherished father-in-law to Amanda Forcucci and Thomas Martin, and a doting grandfather to Ava, Fitzgerald, Sawyer, Johnny, and Maesynn. Matt was also the proud brother to Cheri Nystedt and the late Cynthia Bennett, and son to the late Eunice and Ralph Thomson.

A graduate of UCONN with a Bachelor of General Studies, Matt's thirst for knowledge and dedication to service shone brightly in his illustrious career. He was a proud member of the United States Navy for 25 years, culminating in his retirement as a decorated Chief Warrant Officer (CWO3) Nuclear Power Technician. His courage and leadership were recognized in numerous awards, including but not limited to, Sailor of the Quarter NPTU Windsor in 1994 and Sr. Sailor of the Quarter SSN 706 USS Albuquerque in 1997. Matt's quick thinking and bravery even saved a fellow sailor's life aboard the USS Albuquerque in 1995, an act of heroism that was recognized in local newspapers.

He continued his service to his country as a Supervisor at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding (SUPSHIP) Groton, where he mentored many and brought smiles to the faces of his coworkers. His four decades of service to the United States Government were recognized with a distinguished award just days before his passing.

Matt's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. He loved spending time with his family and friends, playing with his dogs Tinker and Dash, and sailing the seas with Jeanine and Jocelyn. He also took his grandson Johnny out, a vital crew member, every summer over the past decade to teach him the ropes. Ava and her grandpa shared a love of the water, and he was able to take his granddaughter Ava out for her debut sailing trip just this past summer. Sawyer has recently taken an interest in drumming after seeing her grandpa perform in this past year’s Memorial Day Parade. Maesynn and grandpa shared a love of all animals and spent time caring for them when in Kentucky. Fitzgerald and grandpa shared a love of good food.

An avid drummer, he brought rhythm and joy to the Middletown Pipe and Drum Band.

A proud ally of the LGBTQ+ community, he was a regular attendee at the Hamden Pride celebrations organized by his daughter Jacqueline and her wife Amanda.

An active supporter of the Varsity Girls Hamden High School Basketball Team, Matt's cheering could be heard high up in the bleachers. An ardent Boston Red Sox fan, and New England Patriots fan, his spirit was always high, regardless of the score.

He enjoyed traveling to visit with his family, Jacky, Amanda, Johnny, Sawyer, and Fitzgerald locally here in Connecticut, as well as with his daughter Kirstie and granddaughter Ava up in Vermont and Daughter Heather, Son- in-Law Thomas, and granddaughter Maesynn down in Kentucky. He enjoyed visiting other members of his family including his sister Cheri, Brother-in-law Pete, and beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins all mainly throughout the Northeast.

His competitive spirit shone through when he competed in the Bermuda 1-2 Sailboat Race alongside Dan Stadtlander, finishing first in their class.

Matt Thomson was a man of action, a beacon of light, and an inspiration to all. His life was a testament to the power of dedication, love, and joy. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched, and his

influence will continue to inspire for generations to come. His life was a journey well-traveled, and his memory will forever be a guiding star in the hearts of his loved ones.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Matthew Thomson on October 14th, 2023, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at The Barn Restaurant in Groton, CT.
