Mary Allie

December 13, 1924 — September 23, 2011

Mary (Argenbright) Allie of Storrs died September 23, 2011 at the age of 86. She was born in 1924 in Macomb, Illinois, and grew up on her family farm in Blandinsville, IL. She attended University of Illinois and obtained her degree in Home Economics. She then taught Home Ec for three years at the Allahabad Agricultural Institute in India. On the return trip she met up with her sisters Zella and Harriett, and the three of them embarked on a bicycling tour of Europe. Afterward she moved to Ames, Iowa, where she was a columnist for Better Homes and Gardens magazine. While living in Ames she met John Allie. They married in 1953 and moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where their three children were born: Adrienne in 1955, David in 1957, and Renee in 1960. Later in 1960, they moved the family to Storrs, CT. She taught Home Ec at the Captain Nathan Hale School in Coventry, and later worked for the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages at UConn until her retirement. She was an avid quilter, excellent cook, and an active member of the Storrs Congregational Church. Most important of all, however, was her family, and her role as wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by Adrienne Bean and Clarke Bean of Perth, Australia, and their children Laurel Bean of San Antonio, Texas, and Leslie Bean of Grinnell, Iowa; David Allie and Jeanne Allie and their children Daniel Allie and Katy Allie, all of Storrs, and John Allie of New Haven; and Renee Allie of New Orleans, Louisiana. A Memorial Service is planned for November 5th at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church on 29 Puddin Lane, Mansfield. The service will be followed by a lunch reception.
