Martha Louise Hinkel

November 12, 1914 — January 9, 2006

Martha Louise (Condra) Hinkel, 91 of Storrs, CT., wife of the late Dr. Cecil Ellsworth Hinkel, died Monday Jan. 9, 2006 at Windham Community Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health. Born in Jasper County, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. G.E. Condra. Mrs. Hinkel graduated from Stephen F. Austin State College, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree. She began teaching in Huntington and Nacogdoches, Texas schools and then went on to be Assistant Registrar at Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Hinkel then continued her education at Syracuse University where she received her Master of Arts Degree. She then became Dean of Women at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute until the time of her marriage to Dr. Hinkel and then resided in Storrs. Since arriving in Storrs, Mrs. Hinkel became associated with the University of Connecticut holding various positions including Dean of Women, and subsequently Assistant Dean for Residence Student Affairs, a position she held at the time of her retirement. Mrs. Hinkel was very involved in the Storrs community and held several official positions in the University of Connecticut League, the Womens Club of Storrs and the American Association of University Women. She was a patron of the arts and she enjoyed and supported all aspects of the art world. She was an avid sports fan, particularly basketball. Her allegiance to the UConn mens and womens teams and to those athletes who later followed careers on professional basketball teams. Mrs. Hinkel was also an ardent international traveler and in recent times she enjoyed ocean cruising and in particular while on her favorite ship, the Queen Elizabeth 2. She is survived by cousins residing in the mid-west and a host of friends nationwide. A Service of Thanksgiving for her life will be held Saturday Jan. 14, 2006 at 3:00pm at the Storrs Congregational Church, Storrs. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in Cross-Keys Cemetery, Harrisonburg, VA. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the University of Connecticut Foundation, Inc. , for the use of the School of Fine Arts, Storrs, CT. or to a charity of the donor s choice.
