Marjorie Ethel Maynard Englert of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010. She was the daughter of Elsie Alice Noble and Ralph Marvin Maynard. Marjorie was raised in East Hartford and spent her summers growing up on Columbia Lake with her grandmother Alice Beck Noble. With a love for children Marjorie set her sights on college. She was awarded a scholarship to A. B. Colby College and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. She later earned a Graduate diploma from The Nursery Training School of Boston, known today as Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study, Tufts University. She went on to earn her Master's Degree of Early Childhood education at Boston University. She attended advanced courses in Child Development at the University of Wisconsin, University of London, and visited European Children Centers to further her knowledge. She was a Teacher and Director of many Early Childhood Development Facilities. Marjorie was an Assistant Professor in the Child Development and Family Relations Department at the University of Rhode Island and at the Childhood Development Department at Boston University School of Nursing. In 1970 she returned to Connecticut and worked as a consultant for the Early Childhood-Parenting Program for the State of Connecticut Department of Education and continued her work for children. She helped to develop what we know today as Head Start until her retirement in 1978.In 1975 Marjorie married Herbert C. Englert Sr. and enjoyed 10 good years together.They divided their time between Columbia and Florida until Herb Sr. passed in 1985. Marjorie lived a very satisfying life working with young children. She enjoyed her winters in Florida spending time with her friends, playing tennis, learning to paint and many other activities. She especially enjoyed time with her cousins and entertaining at her home on the lake. Marjorie's favorite past times was paddling and swimming on the beautiful lake in Columbia.She will be missed by her many cousins, the Henry M. Beck Sr. Family, The Guy C. Beck Sr. Family, The Lillian Henderson Wood Family of Pennsylvania, The Oswald P. Scheller Family and Lois Wind Family of Ohio. A Memorial Service will be held at Columbia Congregational Church, Columbia, on February 13th at 2:00 pm. There are no calling hours.
