Marilyn Slater Obituary
Slater, Marilyn E. “Lil Auntie”, 88, of Mansfield passed Friday July 19, 2024, after a brief illness. She was born July 9, 1936, at Windham Hospital, the daughter of the late Ernest and Blanche (Russ) Slater and had lived in Mansfield her entire life. She graduated from Windham High School, class of 1954. She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Willimantic, and a 60-year member of the Eastern Star. Her entire career was spent working in retail, beginning with her years of work with W.T. Grant, and J.C. Penney where she managed the catalogue department until she retired. Following her retirement, she worked part-time for The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Lil Auntie was the best playmate, babysitter and adventurer for multiple generations of nieces and nephews. She was never one to pass up the chance to go skiing, sledding down a homemade snow luge, heading to the beach, playing a family game of softball at church camp, or the endless list of activities she would be up for. She was by far the most faithful attendee at every family event, party, or holiday festivity.

Her faith was foundational and guided her not only in her daily life and who she was, but also in her lifelong involvement with her church community which included countless hours volunteering for church suppers, holiday fairs, and fundraisers.

One of her greatest passions was music and singing. She sang in a church choir since she was 11 years old and continued to sing with a choir for 77 years. She took great pride in being able to sing in both the traditional and contemporary church choirs. She loved Broadway musicals and enjoyed the opportunity to sing with the Windham Theater Guild Broadway Chorus.

A big love of hers, was her automobiles. Growing up with all brothers, she learned how to maintain her own cars. You can’t go through her early photo albums without seeing many pictures of her standing beside her latest, favorite car.

She is survived by her sister in laws: Beth Ann Slater, Viola Slater, and June Slater; her nieces and nephews: Heidi (Cheryl), Gerry (Lesley), (Bonnie), Kimberlee, Carlton (Betsy), Donna (Steve), Norm Jr, Mike (Donna), Sue (Shawn), Tom, many special great and great-great nieces and nephews, her beloved family at the First Congregational Church of Willimantic, many dear friends, and her sweet and spirited cat Tommy. She was predeceased by her brothers Roland, Lawrence, Donald, and Norman, her nephews Lawrence Jr, Roland Jr, and niece Sandra.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24 2024, at 11:00am at The First Congregational Church, 199 Valley St., Willimantic.  A private burial will be held at a later date.

Those who wish, may make a memorial contribution to The First Congregational Church of Willimantic, 199 Valley Street, Willimantic Ct 06226 or a charity of their choice.
