Marie James Obituary
Marie A. James, age 99, beloved wife and widow of Walter G. James passed away peacefully on 9/5/2024 at home surrounded by loving family. She was born 5/27/1925 in New York City to the late John F. Stropnicky and Bertha Kubat Stropnicky.
She attended school in NYC, completed high school and met Wally at the Horn and Hardhart bakery where they both worked as high school students. Marie worked at Western Electric during and after the war, until she was married to Wally in 1948 and resided in Kearny, NJ for 48 years. Marie and Wally had many happy years together in New Jersey. Since 1963, they summered with the family at Ashford Lake in CT until Wally’s retirement in 1985 at which time, they rebuilt the summer cottage into a lovely retirement home, where Marie lived until her death. She was an active parishioner of St. Phillips as well as a CCD teacher, a trustee and member of the parish council for many years.
Marie will be dearly missed by her daughter Barbara Niedz, son-in-law Alan Niedz of Montville, NJ, her son, William James and daughter-in-law Eileen Lynch-James of Ashford, CT, and her son Edward James and daughter-in-law Melissa Guiliano, of East Hanover, NJ. Marie had five grandchildren Bethanne Steneck (Jason), Christopher Niedz (Alissa), Casey Shaiken (Daniel), Olivia James, Matthew James and Mark James. Marie had four greatgrandchildren: Ava Steneck, Clara Steneck, Teddy Niedz and Sylvie Niedz.
She is predeceased by all her brothers and sisters and their spouses. She was well-loved by her many nieces and nephews, particularly the Panyko nieces and nephews who cared for her throughout her life, and she considered them as her own children.
The parish community of St. Phillips and dear neighbors held a special place in her heart.
Marie will be most remembered for her strong faith, devout nature, and kindness to everyone.
Visitation hours will be on Sat 9/14/2024 from 9am to 11am at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street, Willimantic, CT a mass of Christian burial at St. Phillp the Apostle, 64 Pompey Hollow Rd. Ashford CT 06278 at 12pm. Marie will be interred in NJ with her husband Walter, and a memorial service will be held in NJ later this fall. Donations in Marie’s memory may be made to: Catholic Charities of Norwich CT or St. Phillips Parish Community, Ashford CT 06278.
