Margaret Hawes

Margaret (Hanko) Hawes, 91, of Windham, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 5, 2010. She was born in Charlaroi, PA on February 26, 1919, the daughter of George and Suzanne (Boda) Hanko. She grew up in Stafford and Tolland, CT until 1945 when she married the late Charles E. Hawes and moved to the Windham area. Margaret was a devoted wife and mother and spent most of her life as a homemaker. She also worked in the foodservice department at the University of Connecticut for 15 years. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking and baking , and sharing this talent with friends and family. She was an active and involved member of Christian Life Assembly, and had a strong faith in God. A very generous woman, she was always willing to put others before herself. She touched many lives. Beside her parents and husband, Margaret was also predeceased by her brothers George, Michael, and John, and her sisters Suzanne Piader and Mary Harding. She is survived by two sons, Robert Hawes of Dade City, Florida and David Hawes and his wife Cathy of Manchester ; four daughters, Carol Hawes of Windham, Deborah Keller and her husband Stephen of Hebron, Donna Fisher and her husband Alex of Willimantic ,and Karen Shaw and her husband Robert of Windham.; a sister-in-law, Anne Hanko of Manchester; twelve grandchildren ; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday Dec. 8th between 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. Her funeral service will be held at Christian Life Assembly, 143 Windham Rd, Willimantic on Thursday at 11:00am with interment following in Windham Center Cemetery.
