Margaret S. Haraghey

Margaret Haraghey, 82, passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2025. Born in Hartford September 28, 1942, she was predeceased by husband, Harold, and parents Stephen and Carmela (Abbate) Scolsky. She completed her education in Hartford, graduating from the former Weaver High School in 1960. While in high school, she worked for Hartford County Medical Association. In 1963, she started her 28-year career as a supervisor with Southern New England Telephone Company (SNET) where she met Harold, the love of her life. They married in 1979 and moved to Hampton, Connecticut. Margaret loved traveling to Cape Cod, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Italy, and Africa with friends, and trips out West with Harold. After retiring from SNET in 1991, Margaret held several positions with the town of Hampton and, in 2001, became the first female elected First Selectman serving two terms.
Margaret is survived by her loving, caring sister Roslie Barrett and husband Robert of Wethersfield and nephew Stephen and wife Amy of Cromwell and their children Samantha and Ryan. She is also survived by wonderful, loving stepson Brian and wife Karen of Hampton who were always there for her, and stepson Harold and wife Kathleen of East Hartford and their children Declan and Shannen, as well as many special Hampton friends.
Margaret was able to remain in her home thanks to help from her family and her devoted caregiver, companion, and good friend, Lisa Channer, who had been with her since December 2022.
Per Margaret’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hampton Fire Department c/o Treasurer Dale DeMontigny, 229 Station Road, Hampton, CT 06247.
