Maisie "May" Guttay

May 25, 1926 — November 27, 2013

Maisie "May" (Kahkonen) Guttay, 87, died on November 27, 2013 at Douglas Manor in Windham, CT. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to the late Matthew and Tyyne Kahkonen. She was predeceased by her brother Eldon. She was the beloved wife of Andrew John Robert Guttay for 65 years and a devoted mother to her four children, Nancy Birmingham and her husband Richard, Dorothy Picard and her husband Dennis, Kathy Guttay and her partner Peter Twombly and David Guttay and his wife Brenda. She also leaves three grandchildren and a great grandchild. May graduated from Detroit High School of Commerce and during WWII was the secretary to the Director of the New Devices Section, General Motors Corp. The family moved to Connecticut in 1961 and for many years she assisted the Registrar at UConn during the add-drop period of student registration. She was a member of the Windham Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, an active member of the Storrs Congregational Church with the Parish Piecers, the sewing circle, the Women's Fellowship, and the Christmas Bazaar. In 1998 she and her husband visited Finland and she was delighted to find relatives and the home where her mother lived as a child and her church. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, was a golfing member of the Willimantic Country Club, and a bowler. She was an avid UConn womens basketball fan and attended all games at Gample Pavilion. She became a Red Sox fan and watched every game on TV. We are heartbroken at her passing. There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday Dec. 4, 2013 at 1:00pm at Storrs Congregational Church, 2 North Eagleville Rd., Storrs. Interment will follow in Storrs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial donations to Storrs Congregational Church, 2 North Eagleville Rd., Storrs, CT. 06268.
