Louis A. Young, 82, of Chaplin, CT, passed away August 19th, 2012 at St. Joseph Living Center in Windham,CT due to respiratory failure. Lou was born April 8, 1930 in Norwich, CT to Oliver and Mabel Young. Lou is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Beverly Young , as well as his son and daughter in law, Gary and Linda Young, of Granby, CT; his daughter and son in law, Karen Koniar and Tom Zanotti of Coventry, CT. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Christine and her husband Christopher McMahon of Coventry, CT. and two great grandchildren, his great granddaughter Attianna Prenetta and great grandson Matthew McMahon. Lou often referred to his great grandchildren as his "pride and joy". Lou is also survived by his brothers, Donald and wife Jeanne Young of Willimantic, and Jerry Young of Windham; as well as his two sisters Marilyn Robinson of Scotland and Betty and her husband Amos Morin of Willimantic as well as several nieces and nephews. Lou is also survived by his two aunts, Katherine and Martha of Fitchville, CT. Lou went to elementary school in Scotland Connecticut and graduated from Windham Trade School now Windham Technical School. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953 as a mechanic in Germany, where he repaired Jeeps, trucks and tanks. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as a mechanic for several service stations and garages over the decades including 30 plus years with the Firestone Tire Company. Lou's love of mechanics continued in his private life as he was a part of his own successful racing crew which won many races along the east coast. Lou was always willing to sit down and talk about racing or how his team worked to design an engine that was used in racing by many teams for many years. Lou remained a NASCAR race fan the rest of his life and tried to catch every race that was broadcast right up to his final days. Lou and his wife Beverly enjoyed many activities together including camping with family as well as their many friends. Lou and Beverly were enthusiastic square dancers for over 25 years, during which Lou also became a caller. Lou was an active member of his community as a member of the Willimantic Elks Club and an active member of the First Congregational Church of Willimantic. The Young family would like to give a very special thank you to those who cared for Lou during his final days including those with VNA East, and the VNA Hospice program nurse Linda, and all those at Saint Joseph Living Center. A special thank you to the DuVall family for their support, love and concern. Services will be held at the First Congregational Church Of Willimantic, 199 Valley St., Willimantic, CT, Thursday Aug 23, 2012 at 11:00am. There are no calling hours. Memorial donations in Louis Young's memory can be made to The First Congregational Church Christian Education Fund or General Congregational Fund or to Saint Joseph Living Center.
