Lorena "Bunny" Lombardo

August 25, 1917 — June 12, 2014

Lorena A. ( Bunny )Lombardo Lorena A. (Bunny) Lombardo went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 12, 2014, at the age of 96. Bunny was born in Willimantic, CT, to Frank P. Lombardo and Mary (Longo) Lombardo on August 25, 1917 and was a lifelong resident. Bunny was employed by Brand Rex (General Cable) for 50 - years. She started work on the floor of the company and worked her way up in various positions, until she held an executive position with the company, which she held for many years. Bunny was deeply involved and devoted to St. Joseph's Church and her faith. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Women's Auxiliary and assisted in the kitchen each Friday when they had bingo. Bunny also inherited her mother Mary's love of Bingo and would play wherever there was a game, even when she was on vacation. If there was a bingo game she would be there. Her philanthropic work included volunteering at Windham Hospital for 50 - years. She started out as a candy striper when she was just a teenager. She then was trained to be nurses aide during World War II, when they were short staffed at the hospital. After her retirement she worked as a volunteer in the billing department, and her final position was to work at the information desk every Monday; until her health would no longer allow her to do so. She also volunteered for the Guild for the Blind and helping transport the handicapped in and around the Willimantic area. In addition, she also transported any friend in need of a ride. Whether it be to a doctors appointment or grocery shopping, she would not take no for an answer. When she was able to do it she did and that was that. She took great pleasure out of helping others and did so in a variety of ways. For enjoyment Bunny spent many days at the beach. In the summer she enjoyed the Northeast Shoreline and in the winter she would go to Florida for a month and enjoy the sunshine. Bunny also bowled for many years on a team at the Lucky Strike Bowling Allies. She was one of their top bowlers when she was active. She was a good neighbor especially to the children whom she loved dearly. Bunny was the Easter Bunny all year round as she always kept candy for the children in her neighborhood. They all knew she had a lollypop or two to hand out. At Easter every year she would stuff plastic eggs, along with all the rest of the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Joseph's Church. She also made sure that she donated to all the causes that the church took up, either directly or through a friend when she could no longer get to church. Bunny was a kind and caring person who thought of everyone first. She was a devoted: daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was the caretaker in her family, especially to her brother Louis whom she took home every Sunday and every holiday. The two of them would watch football games at UConn or the Red Sox on T.V., and when these two were not in season she was a great fan of the Women's and Men's UConn Basketball teams. Bunny will be dearly missed by her family and friends who loved her more than she could ever know. She is survived by her brother, J. Thomas Lombardo, of Stamford, CT and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by four sisters: Mrs. Josephine Boroski, Mrs. Clara M. Gallagher, Mrs. Margaret Evans, and Mrs. Jennie Ryan and four brothers: Louis, Ignatius, Frank and Michael. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Living Center for the excellent care that she received there. In addition, I would like to thank Stephania, her day nurse at Windham Hospital, in the ICU, for her excellent care for both Bunny and her family. We give special thanks to Mickey DeSciscio without whom Bunny could not have stayed in her home as long as she did, and home is the place Bunny loved the best.
