Lionel G. Jean, Sr. passed away after a long illness on Friday, May 11th 2012. He was born in Lewiston, Maine, on January 12, 1927, and was a resident of Coventry for 56 years. Lionel had the "gift of gab" and was very active in local politics where he served on the Democratic Town Committee and a term as a Town Selectman. A veteran of World War II, he was employed as a tool and die maker at Pratt and Whitney for 33 years before retiring in 1989. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed following UConn athletics and his beloved Boston Red Sox. Lionel was pre-deceased by the love of his life, Jeanette (Rondeau). He leaves behind his four children: Claudia and her husband Joseph Mayer of Willimantic; Lionel Jean, Jr. and his wife Sally of Keene, NH; Elizabeth Jean of Coventry; and Karen and her husband Dan Hickey of Coventry. Lionel was very much a family man who cherished his grandchildren: Brian Mayer, Karyn Case, Shannon LaHouse, Jason Jean, and Kiley Spaulding. He also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren. Lionel will always be remembered as a true "gentle man" who treated everyone with respect and kindness. He will be sorely missed by all. Lionel's family will receive relatives and friends at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson Street (Rte. 195) Willimantic, between 9:00 & 10:00am on Wednesday May 16, 2012, followed by his Funeral Mass at St. Mary Church, 1600 Main St. Coventry at 10:30 am.
