Leopold Michael Neckermann Iii

June 14, 1936 — October 26, 2013

Leo Neckermann, III , 77, passed away at Hartford Hospital after a brave and spirited battle with bone cancer. He leaves behind a wife Pauline Neckermann, a son Michael and a daughter and son in law Hilary Neckermann and Dexter Herron. He also leaves siblings Jim Neckermann and Marjorie Mairson and Wendy Helbig, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved their "Uncle Leo." He was predeceased by a close brother, Bill. Recently, Leo and the love of his life, Pauline, celebrated their 50ths anniversary . He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corp..He loved children and was a principal in Columbia and Durham/Middlefield for many years. However, his real love was classroom teaching and he was often greeted in retirement by former students who told him that he was their favorite teacher. He was an ardent fan of the New York Yankees. This support grew from construction work his family did on the original Yankee Stadium. This work helped his grandfather and father and the LM Neckermann and Son construction company to continue business during the Great Depression. He also never missed an opportunity to tease the Red Sox students in his class. Leo loved to spread humor and good will as much as he could and would often do random nice things for people. Leo would bring "a box with a suspicious powder on it" every month to the Columbia Post Office and tell employees to carefully examine their Dunkin Doughnuts. His knowledge of history was unparalleled and he could literally tell you the details of just about any battle of any war that the US had fought in. He loved military vehicles and planes and model building and even created a "model club" for the Horace W. Porter School children that he ran without pay. Watching historical movies with him was a rich experience because he could add layers of insight to every event. He could also ruin it for you by telling you that the film makers used the wrong planes for certain shots.. And his son (a nature buff) took great joy in returning the favor by telling him certain animals and insects didn't belong in the present day movies locations he was watching. His two favorite movies were Gunga Din and Zulu. In both movies, the heroes demonstrated unheralded bravery against insurmountable odds, a quality Leo used in his battle with cancer. He could best be described as loyal, and straight shooting. You always knew where you stood with Leo and his upbeat personality made friends easily and forever. Leo was just as he appeared, one of the most honorable and trustworthy men you could ever meet. We are all a little poorer for his passing. Funeral Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Home, Willimantic CT. There will be no calling hours. Please visit www.potterfuneralhome.com for online memorial guest book.
