Leland E. Hawkins

Leland E. Hawkins, 92, of Mansfield Center, husband of Louise (Burdick) Hawkins, died May 2, 2010. Mr. Hawkins was the son of the late Harold C. Hawkins and Minnie W. Hawkins. He was born in Mansfield Center, CT and died at home a mile away from his birth place. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Louise (Burdick) Hawkins, son Leland Jr. and his wife Phyllis of Yarmouth Port, MA, daughter Linda and her husband Carl Hansen of Bradenton Fl. He also leaves four grandsons, Ryan Hansen and his wife Tammy, Eric Hansen and his wife Tracy, all of Florida, Chad Hawkins and his wife Kristen of Massachusetts, and Matthew Hawkins and his wife Marta of Colorado, as well as seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters Amy Inman, Dorothy Bailey and brothers Harold and Willis and is survived by brothers Albert, Winston and Winthrop, sister Virginia Bolduc, and sister-in-law Rita Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Navy on the rescue tug boat ATR 58 from 1944 to 1946 engaged in the South Pacific. He was employed at Pratt and Whitney prior to joining the Navy and was a self employed carpenter until retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Mansfield Center, Mansfield Historical Society, Mansfield Community Club and former Little League coach. Mr. Hawkins was a devoted husband and father and especially proud of his grand and great grand children. He enjoyed camping for 20 years at Swanzy Lake, NH and spending 26 winters on the shore of the Little Manatee River in Ruskin, Florida. He also enjoyed researching family genealogy and spending time keeping up with family and friends on his personal computer. Mr. Hawkins and his wife traveled extensively in retirement visiting Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Swiss Alps, Ireland, all Providences of Canada, Alaska and Copper Canyon in Mexico. He especially enjoyed rail travel. A special thank you to the Radiation Dept. of W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Dr. Baker with Oncology Associates at Windham Hospital and VNA East for the wonderful care provided Mr. Hawkins and his family. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday May 4th between 6:00 and 8:00pm at Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00am at First Church of Christ Congregational, Rte 195, Mansfield Center with interment following in Mansfield Center Cemetery.
