Karl Hammarstrom

March 13, 1918 — November 18, 2014

Karl Hammarstrom (March 16, 1918 to November 18, 2014) Karl Hammarstrom, 96, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. He was born in Sweden, the son of Gustave Hammarstrom and Ebba Lundin-Hammarstrom. He leaves behind his wife, Alyce of 64 years and was predeceased by their son, Jay Hammarstrom. He also leaves two daughters; Karen Hammarstrom of Florida, Nancy Hammarstrom of Columbia; a granddaughter, Kristen Hammarstrom of Florida and three great-granddaughters; Jaycia, 7, Yasin, 5 and Amina, 1, also of Florida. Karl was so proud of his family's immigration from Sweden to the U.S and how his father patiently bided time in Canada working as a dynamite expert and stonemason until he could make entry into the U.S. through the Canadian border and send for his family who was still in Sweden. All who met him knew how proud he was of his home which was built during the Great Depression by Karl and his father. Each stone of the house was hand cut individually and meticulously thanks to the skills of Karl's father, a professional stonecutter by trade in Sweden, who then trained Karl to cut stone for their house in Columbia. Karl was also extremely proud of his military service. A WW II Veteran in the European Theatre, Karl could captivate others with stories of his experiences driving an ambulance through hostile territory and working as an MP in Germany at the very end of war. Upon his return to the states after World War II, Karl worked at Electric Motive, then Pratt & Whitney and finally at UCONN as a media specialist serving faculty throughout the campus for many years. Karl enjoyed running the sound systems for the basketball games; he remembered the days when attendance at the UCONN Lady Huskies games consisted of only the coaches, the girl's parents and himself. Karl displayed his zest for life and strength of personality right up until his final moments; he died peacefully at home with his wife Alyce and daughter Nancy at his side. The family would like to thank caregivers, Linda Reynolds, Carol Walkup, Effie Howard, and Lynne Berry who provided such wonderful and compassionate care and support for Karl. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Columbia Center Burying Ground Cemetery.
