Julia M. Quimby, 79, of Columbia, died on Saturday November 24, 2012. Born in 1933 in Wilton, CT, Judy, as she was nicknamed by her grandmother, was an accomplished equestrian as a young girl. In 1955, she graduated from UCONN, where she met her husband of over fifty years, Art, a standout basketball player. They married in 1958 and settled in Columbia, where in addition to caring for her family, she was an active volunteer for a variety of community groups, including the Columbia Congregational Church and the Visiting Nurse Association. Over the years, she enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, woodworking, crafting, and quilting. She and her husband, who predeceased her in 2010, enjoyed their retirement years traveling in their RV and spending time with their grandchildren. She is survived by her three children, James Quimby, Kathleen Quimby Garcia, and Paul Quimby; her daughter-in-law Corinna Quimby; her son-in-law Oliver Garcia; her six grandchildren, Katie and Jessica Quimby, Alex and Nate Garcia, Caroline and Jack Quimby; and her brother Harry Marhoffer. A memorial celebration will be held on Friday November 30 at 4:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall at the Columbia Congregational Church, 325 Rte.87 Columbia, CT.
