Joseph Carl Meigs, age 84, of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2014 at home with his family by his side. Born August 29, 1930 in Palmerville, NC to Joseph Carl Meigs and Lola Vann Eddins Meigs he spent his childhood years in North Carolina, later attending Wake Forest and Tulane University where he studied English. He then went on to a career as a college professor teaching at Tulane, Salem College, Marquette University, University of Hawaii, and finally Eastern Connecticut University where he taught for 25 years. His primary professional interest was the study of linguistics and the development of language. His personal interests were varied but gravitated to the arts. In his retirement years he pursued cello, ceramics, and blacksmithing. Throughout his life, he developed himself to be a formidable cook which brought great pleasure to his family on a regular basis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Elizabeth Stevenson Meigs and his sister Sarah Meigs Morgan. He leaves behind his sons Geoffrey of Mansfield, Jonathan and his wife Cynthia of Corning, NY, and Edward of Windsor. He also leaves behind three sisters, Gertrude Venters of Palmerville, NC, Mary Honeycutt of McClean, VA and Rachel Joyce of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
