Joseph Baran Obituary
Joseph G. Baran, 92, of Windham, Connecticut, passed away on June 5, 2023, after a four-year courageous battle with dementia/Alzheimers.
Joe was born on March 18, 1931, to Mary and Joseph Baran in Willimantic, Connecticut. Shortly after graduating from technical school, he was drafted into the Korean War. After serving four years, he worked as a builder/finish carpenter for the next 50 years. He was proud of his Polish heritage that instilled a humble, but noble work ethic.
Joe was known for his affinity and expertise with crafting wood. He loved to cut it, stack it, and burn it in his wood stove. He could point to many homes and projects that he built in the Windham area, but perhaps his most proud accomplishment was his retirement home that he built in 1990, showcasing his carpentry talent with custom raised panels, custom oak cabinets, oak beams, and pegged floors. He was a hard worker who took pride in his craft.
Aside from his love of carpentry, Joe also enjoyed his retirement by engaging in many hobbies with his friends. He loved playing darts and horseshoes. He was a proud member of the Fin, Fur and Feather Club in Chaplin where he would often go to do his favorite hobby - fly fishing. Joe would frequently fish throughout Connecticut and Rhode Island with his close friends, usually in “secret fishing spots” that he would only whisper about in a guarded manner. Though he had several longtime friends, and friends of all ages, he held a special bond with his longtime fishing buddy Wayne Landon. The family is planning on having a granite bench in his memory placed at his favorite fishing pond at the Fin, Fur and Feather Club in the coming months.
Joe was a humble, self-made man who will be remembered for his infectious laugh, humorous stories filled with wisdom, hard work ethic, and love of family.
Joe is survived by: his son Joseph and his wife Darcy, his granddaughters Resia and Kybree; his son James, and his grandson Avery. Joe would love to spend time with his grandkids and saw them often. He built strong bonds, teaching lifelong lessons and creating timeless memories. Uncle Joe also adored his nephew and nieces; Mary Baran, John Baran, and Linda Baran.
Joe was predeceased by his three brothers and sister in-law: Edward, who passed in 1989; John, who passed in 2014; his sister-in-law Bonnie, who passed in 2019; and his brother Walter, who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country at the age of 19, fighting in World War Two.
A graveside service will be held at Saint Joseph Cemetery, 134 Club Road, Willimantic, Connecticut, on June 16, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
