Joseph Allegro

Giuseppe "Joseph" Allegro, 87, of Windham, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, peacefully passed away in to God's grace surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Joe was born on March 4, 1922, the second child of Giuseppe and Lucia (Raymondi) Allegro. He married his wife of sixty-two years, Vincenza Fiasconaro, on February 15, 1946. After serving in World War II and the Korean War as a member of the National Guard, Joe was employed by American Thread, Electro-Motive and as a mason. After twenty-five years of service at Pratt& Whitney in East Hartford, Joe joyfully retired to his favorite pastimes of gardening, wine-making, tending to his goats, and most of all, spending time with his family. A man of exceptional wit and good humor, he was a quiet presence in his community and loved by all who knew him. A past member and president of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Lodge, Joe captained the Lodge's 1963 bocce team to a championship season. Joe is survived by his wife, Vincenza, his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Bonnie Allegro of Willimantic; daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Michael Retzlaff of Harahan, LA; daughter, Maria Allegro of Willimantic; son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Deirdre Allegro of Vernon; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and sisters, Antoinette Cocchi of Springfield, MA and Giuseppina Bruno of Brooklyn, NY. He was predeceased by brothers Pasquale and Louis, and sisters, Nina Leta and Maria Allegro. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, and Willimantic on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a gathering at the funeral home on Monday at 10:15 a.m. prior to the procession to his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Willimantic.
