John A. Woodworth M.D. HAMPTON - John A. Woodworth, M.D., of Hampton, died Friday, July 9, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was born May 1, 1915 in Olneyville, RI and he was a 1939 graduate of the Syracuse University College of Medicine. Dr. Woodworth's military career began with his entry in 1937 and his discharge with the rank of Major in 1945. He participated in Operation Torch, the allied invasion of North Africa; the amphibious/air invasions of the islands of Pantelleria, Sicily and Salerno, Italy; was transferred by sea to India and then "over the hump" of the Himalayas to Szechaun, China for three months during Air Force operations against Manchuria and Japan; flew back to India for the air campaign in Burma, returning to the U.S. in December 1944. Dr. Woodworth entered private medical practice in Moosup in October 1945, was appointed to the medical staff of Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, where he subsequently became Chief of Cardiology and Chief of Medicine. In 1974 he moved to Hampton and retired in 1980 after 35 years of practice. John was an avid mountain climber. He climbed in New England, Wyoming, British Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, the Italian Alps and Nepal. He was a life member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the American Alpine Club. He was a member and former deacon of the Hampton Congregational Church, active at Trail Wood and an avid photographer and painter. John wrote numerous articles for the Hampton Gazette and had completed the indexing of the local newspaper. He authored two books, The Occasion Fleeting, a biographical accounting of his World War II experiences as a flight surgeon and Forgotten Memories, a genealogical family history. He is survived by his wife, Frances Woodworth, whom he married in 1987; one daughter, Anne Stevens of PA and seven stepchildren, John J. DuBois, Steven DuBois, Glenn DuBois, Roxanne Black, Kim Seely, Cheryl DuBois-Olsen and Curt DuBois; six siblings; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his faithful companion, "Tillie". He was predeceased by a son, John Robson. There will be no calling hours. A public Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Hampton Congregational Church. Burial will be private in the North Cemetery, Hampton.
