John “Jack” Sunmark, 76, passed away September 20, 2022 at Hartford Hospital. Born and raised in Norwich, he was a longtime resident of Storrs. He graduated from ECSU with a BA in Psychology and art, and attended UCONN graduate school. He and his wife, Barbara, owned and operated a florist business for 34 years. Jack had a zest for life and a thirst for knowledge.
He had a passion for politics, art, music, literature, language and travel. His musical tastes ranged from Caribbean Zouk to classical, with a particular fondness for baroque music and opera. Jack’s happiest days were spent traveling internationally with Barbara, returning often to Le Marche Italy and Martinique. He immersed himself in the culture of every country he visited. If he couldn’t master the language he would fake it, and somehow he was always understood, making friends along the way. Travel always included many hours devoted to finding the most authentic local restaurant resulting in countless memorable meals that he enthusiastically recommended to family and friends. He leaves his wife of 51 years, Barbara, his sisters-in-law Lorna Gershenowitz, Patricia Grynbaum(Joe), nieces Deborah Gershenowitz(Aaron) Susan Rall(Mike) nephew Michael Grynbaum(Juli) and 5 great nieces and nephews. Funeral services were private.
