John "Biff" A. Schellig, 97, of South Windham, died March 20, 2011. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Hilda (Russell) Schellig. He was born March 29, 1914 in Zwickau, Germany, son of the late Alfred and Paula (Gruner) Schellig. He resided in Hyde Park, NY, moved to Inverness, FL, in 1980 and to Connecticut in 2003. He worked as a Baker, for many years at both, Vassar College Poughkeepsie, NY, and the Athenaeum Hotel in Chautauqua, NY. He was a US Army Veteran of WW II serving in the European Theater. After the war, he was a Credit Manager for the Krug Baking Company and Salesman for Kustas and Chambers. He was past Commander of the VFW Post in Poughkeepsie, NY and past Commander of the American Legion Post in Staatsburg, NY. He was an avid golfer, bowler, fisherman and gardener. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Henry Hinckley of South Windham; 3 grandchildren, John Hinckley and his wife Dawn of South Windham, Russell Hinckley and his wife, Kristen of Wallingford and Clark Hinckley of South Windham and 5 great grandchildren, Rebecca, Jessica, Samantha, Nathan, and Lauren. He was predeceased by his sisters Elsa Schellig, Martha Kemmerer and step-brother Richard Doring. His memorial service will be held on Saturday March 26, 2011 at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church of Willimantic, 199 Valley Street Willimantic with the Rev. Richard Haverly officiating.
