John F. Root, 69, of Windham, husband of Priscilla (Lucas) Root, died Friday December 10, 2004 at home. He was born March 22, 1935 in Corning, NY, son of the late Robert Root and Marie (Owens) Niemann and had lived in Windham for over 35 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and prior to his retirement was employed as a guidance counselor at Parish Hill High School. He was a former member of the Windham Board of Selectmen and president of the First Taxing District of Windham. Mr. Root was a member of Masonic Lodge #44 A.F. & A.M., was an umpire for the Little League, coached in Pony League and volunteered at the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Willimantic. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Bruce Pienkoski of Clifton Park, NY, 3 granddaughters, Laura, Sarah and Aimee Pienkoski, 2 sisters, Marilyn Ostrander of Pulaski, NY and Barbara Doyle of New Jersey, a brother, Gerald Root of Corning, NY, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, John Root Jr. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte.195, Willimantic on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Scotland Congregational Church, Scotland.
