John C. Pokorny, 69, of Thompson Hill Rd., Columbia, husband of Gretchen (Becker) Pokorny, died Wednesday May 12, 2004 at Douglas Manor in Windham. He was born May 30, 1934 in Willimantic the son of the late Charles and Helen (Lorenc) Pokorny. John was a 1952 graduate of Windham High School and then attended the Ward School of Electronics in Hartford. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958 at Fort Huachua, AZ. He had been employed by SNET for 33 years prior to retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. John was an amateur radio operator with the call letters W1HNX. John enjoyed woodworking, his dog Sam and his granddogs Onyx and Mandy. In addition to his wife he is survived by his son John Pokorny Jr. of Mansfield, his daughter Cathryn Pokorny and William Nealon of S. Windsor and his brother James and his wife Cheryl of N.H. John will be dearly missed by his family and many close friends. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00pm. His funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday at 10:30am with burial following in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham.
