John Romeo Mathieu

November 27, 1914 — August 22, 2008

John Romeo Mathieu, 93, of Columbia, passed away Friday, August, 22, 2008, peacefully, at his home, as he wished, with his wife of 74 years, Mary (Kozin) Mathieu and his family by his side. He was born November 27, 1914 in Columbia, the son of William and Arthemise (Houle) Mathieu. John was born, raised and lived his entire life on Old Stone Chimney Road, known today as Old Willimantic Road, Columbia. He had various jobs, and was employed most recently as a manager of chicken processing plants. He donated his time and energy to the community of Columbia as a charter and life member of the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department. At home, he and his wife managed a small farm where they raised their son, enjoying life and watching their family grow. In addition to his wife, Mary, John leaves behind his only child, Edward and his wife Marjorie Mathieu of Columbia; four grandchildren, Deborah Mathieu-Byers and her husband Stephen of New York City, John Edward Mathieu and his wife Susan Johns of Tolland, Mary (Mathieu) Arsenault and her husband Joseph of Lebanon, Michael T. Mathieu of Columbia and a sister, Beatrice Mathieu of Arizona. He also leaves behind five great grandsons and two great granddaughters, several nieces, nephews and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by ten siblings. While everyone who knew John is deeply saddened at his loss, reassurance is achieved by knowing he, an avid Boston Red Sox fan, now has the best seat in the house. His family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Rte. 195, Willimantic on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St. Willimantic with assembly at the church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any Catholic charity, the Columbia Volunteer Fire Department or the Columbia Senior Center.
