John Balogh III Obituary
John Balogh III, 82 of Ashford CT passed away peacefully on March 3rd at Windham Hospital after a long battle with illness. He defied the odds and lived out his final years enjoying his birdwatching and sunbathing with his boy Sammy by his side sharing memories of his past self with anyone who passed by.
John was born in Willimantic, the youngest son of John Jr. and Irene Balogh whose parents migrated to Ashford from Hungary at the turn of the century and established a small dairy. John was especially proud of his Hungarian heritage and was a member of the Hungarian Social club of Ashford. He grew up in Willimantic and attended Windham High School where he was a record holding member of the swim team. He was also a member of the Rear Gears Auto club in Norwich. He was active in both the Fin Fur and Feather club, the Windham Fish and Game club and the Tri County Bass Anglers.
Upon graduating from high school, John became a draftsman for Dole Cab in Willimantic and subsequently the CT Carpenters Union Local 24, he was initiated in 1968 and retired in 2003 with a 35 year career as a carpenter and millwright.
Was an avid hunter and fisherman who raised his young family as homesteaders with his former wife Joanne in the 1960’s. The family spent summers at their beach cottage in East Matunuck, RI. They raised poultry, gardened and split firewood to maintain their 3 wood stoves. He loved and looked forward to opening day of trout season every year, a big deal to his young children and a tradition they have fond memories of. In addition many summers the extended family would come together for traditional Hungarian BBQ “Sutni Szalona”.
He and former wife Linda Ewen began Fenton River GSPs in 1998 combining their love of the German Shorthaired Pointer with their love of hunting.
John is survived by his children, Deena Balogh and husband Michael Hogg of FL, John (Buzzy) Balogh the IV and wife Karry of Ashford, Stephanie and her husband Dan Connell of Willimantic. Grandchildren Ashley Connell and her husband Edwin Beltran of Mansfield, Jason Connell and wife Danielle of Tolland, Caylin and her husband Ryan Fitzgerald of Woodbridge, Grace Balogh and her love Jake Rambone of Ashford. Great grandchildren Mason, Arlo, Chase, Skylar, Oaklee, Aurora and Lela. He also leaves behind his siblings Richard Balogh and wife Irene of Willimantic, Mary Mahue of Columbia, and Jeanette Werth of Willimantic.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Ashford Senior Center, 25 Tremko Lane, Ashford, CT.
