John H. Currier, 84, of Willimantic, passed away on March 17, 2015 in Willimantic of natural causes. He was born on August 21, 1930, in New London, CT however at age of 3 his family moved to Madison, NH. John was predeceased by his wife, Shirley P. Currier; sister, Eunice Currier Szymkowicz; brother, Thomas Currier; mother, Eunice Greene Currier and father Jesse Currier. His departure leaves behind his daughter, Pamela Currier Ouimette; son in-law Paul Ouimette and their granddaughter Brittany Shaye Ouimette; granddaughter, Jennifer Pressey Ouimette Schmidt, son in-law Paul Schmidt and their great-grandchildren, Cayce Christopher Schmidt and Kiarra Rayne Schmidt. After graduating from Plymouth State Teachers College, Plymouth, NH, he took his first teaching job at Hood Elementary School in Derry, NH where he met his wife of 58 years. John married Shirley August 26, 1956. In 1958 they moved to Columbia, CT where he began teaching English for Windham Public Schools at Windham High School. John eventually became Head of the English Department at WHS. He retired from Windham in 1989 and moved to Bradenton, FL. In August 2013 John and his wife returned to CT to be closer to family. John loved to travel the world with family and friends and chartered several WHS student excursions oversees. He enjoyed working with foreign exchange programs, being involved in many advisory committees, student body activities and sporting events at WHS. He was also Chairman of the Crystal Yearbook Committee. John spent his "summer vacations" teaching water safety, swimming instruction and boating safety on Silver Lake, Echo Lake, and Crystal Lake in NH where they had a second home on Silver Lake. John was also a Shriner which he was very proud of. John was also proud of his accomplishments and loved to be with family and friends and have a wonderful time in whatever he chose to be a part of. There will be a memorial service and celebration of life for John and his wife Shirley this summer in the White Mountains of NH.
