Jean Richards Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Jean (McQuade) Richards of Willimantic, CT announces her passing on Thursday, June 22, 2023 in Venice, FL.
Born on February 16, 1930, to parents Hugh and Helen McQuade, Jean spent her life in Connecticut where she was born. After graduating from Windham High School, she married Robert Richards and they raised three children in the home they lovingly built in Willimantic.
As an ambitious woman, Jean began a career in school food administration at Windham High School and went on to manage the Coventry Schools Food Service program for over 20 years. She loved her career and traveled frequently around the country to conferences with the Connecticut School Food Service Association (now the School Nutrition Association of CT). She was elected by her peers to serve as president of the association and retired in 1996.
She also loved traveling outside of work. Whether it was from London to Ireland to California or Maine, Jean enjoyed adventures like dog sledding in Colorado or parasailing in Florida.
Jean had a passion for local politics and served on Willimantic’s zoning board for several years. She loved the town of Willimantic and even volunteered at the Willimantic Textile and History Museum in her retirement. She was also very involved in her church and was an active member of the St Joseph’s Women’s Club. She will be remembered for her laughter, strength and most of all, her devotion to family.
Jean is survived by her three children, Michael Richards (Patty), Peggy Schaedler (Joe), and Cynthia Johnson; her brother Hugh McQuade, and sisters Nancy Sanborn and Pat Fishburne (Guppy); grandchildren, Melissa Cramer, Dale Powers (Tyson), Tom Johnson (Niki), and Ellie Johnson; step grandchildren Tonya Bowzer (Tommy) and Albert Tabor, Kristin Schaedler, and Kimberly Watrous and several great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., Willimantic, on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Her Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson St., Willimantic at 9:30 am, burial to follow at St. Phillip’s Cemetery, Ashford, CT. A celebration of life will begin at 12:30 pm at The Elks Lodge in Willimantic. Memorial donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America,
