Jean Cross (Stevens) Handfield, 78, of Friendship St. Willimantic, passed away peacefully on Wednesday Feb. 18, 2004 at the Haven Health Center with her family at her side. She was born in Litchfield on Jan. 23, 1926 the daughter of Millicent and Ernest Stevens and graduated from Ansonia High School. She was married to Robert T. Handfield on April 17, 1948 in Willimantic and was a devoted mother to her 3 daughters; Mrs. Donna Bongiovanni of Manchester, Mrs. Gail Hill of East Lyme and Mrs. Sheree Rondeau of Lebanon. Jean was previously employed by Southern New England Telephone in Derby and as a Certified LPN at Windham Hospital and Roncalli Health Center in Willimantic. She was actively involved with the Girl Scouts of America. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed craftwork. She was predeceased by brothers Arthur Stevens, Ralph Stevens, Joseph Stevens, and sisters Mrs. Eva Norton, Mrs. Adeline McCall, Mrs. Evelyn Welton and Mrs. Charlotte Henriques. In addition to her husband and daughters , Jean is survived by her sister Mrs. Mildred Gallegous of Newington and 4 precious grandchildren; Stacy Yuschalk, Paula Rondeau, Sarah Bongiovanni and Christina Yuschalk. Her family will receive friends at the Potter Funeral Home 456 Jackson St. (Rte. 195) Willimantic on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30am prior to her 11:00am Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Church, Valley St. Willimantic. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windham. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial donations to either the Hebron Volunteer Fire Dept., 44 Main St. Hebron, CT. 06248 or to St. Mary's Church Repair Fund, 80 Maple Ave., Willimantic,Ct. 06226.
