Janis "John" Leo Keiss, 80, of Manchester, formerly of Willimantic, beloved husband of 53 years to Valda (Brakovskis) Keiss, passed away Sunday Dec. 26, 2004 at Hartford Hospital. He was born in Baltinava, Latvia on Nov. 10, 1924 the son of the late Jazeps and Magdalena Keiss. He immigrated to Australia in 1949 where he finally met the woman he had fallen in love with at first sight in Germany. They were married in Jan. of 1952. Mr. Keiss was an assistant electronic engineer for Anderson Laboratories (Microtime Division) in Bloomfield for 26 years. He had a passion for hunting and fishing and was a member of the Latvian Hunting and Fishing Club. He was a member of the American Latvian Lutheran Church in Willimantic for 41 years which he helped construct. Janis was a musician playing the accordion and the harmonica. He was also a designer , inventor and master repairman of electronic equipment. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by 3 daughters, Dzintra Ostergren and her husband Todd of San Diego, CA., Dr. Benita Keiss of San Diego and Aija Hangland of Manchester; a sister Daina Giptere in Latvia and nieces, nephews and cousins in Latvia. Janis will be dearly missed by his daughter's pets, Jasper and Peps. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Antons and Francis Keiss of Latvia. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00am at the Latvian Lutheran Church, 76 Windham Rd. Willimantic with burial following in East Cemetery, Manchester. There are no calling hours.
