Janice "Jan" Petit Obituary
Janice “Jan” B. Petit, 73, of Windham, CT passed away on May 8, 2024. She was born on January 28, 1951, in Hartford, CT to Lorraine (Morrin) and Lucien G. Petit. Jan graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy, West Harford in 1969. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, 1974, although her informal education never ended.

Jan lived a rewarding and interesting life. She married Edward Roczniak, Jr. on October 26, 1997. They lived at Dark Star Farm in Moodus, CT for many years before moving to Windham.

Jan was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1978 to 1993. She was hired at J. Eugene Smith Library, Eastern Connecticut State University, in 1999 as a University Assistant in Access Services. Promoted to Library Technical Assistant in 2002, she worked there until her retirement in July 2021.

As a volunteer, Jan was an active member of Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, serving on various committees. She was also active in The Central Connecticut Craft Co-operative. Jan worked at Down Cellar Clothing in Deep River as a high-quality shibori tie-dyer and fabric printer. She remained a studio potter throughout her life. Her ceramic creations were always one-of-a-kind pieces of artistry.

Jan began studies in zoology at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, with a special interest in wolves. For two years, she volunteered as an animal handler and docent there before the commute got to be too much.

Before 2001, Jan started volunteering for Doberman Rescue Unlimited of New England, and from then on, she and Ed connected with dogs. Every dog was a member of their family. They owned award-winning, world-class Doberman Pinschers. Jan and Ed worked hard to support one of the rarest dog breeds, the Chinook. In fact, their dog, Caoimhe, is the top winning Chinook in the history of the breed.

Jan enjoyed cooking and baking, crafts of all types, and had a deep love for Ed, and their dogs. A devoted wife and friend, Jan was dearly loved and will be greatly missed, especially by her brother John and his wife Dianne, and their son, John.

A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, and a celebration of her life will be scheduled later. Memorial contributions may be made to Doberman Rescue Unlimited, Inc., 52 Tenney Rd., Sandown, NH 03873.
